Interviewing a Wedding DJ can seem like a daunting task. You might feel intimidated since you don’t know much about that business, or you might just not know exactly what to ask. As with anything, it is important to do your homework and be clear about what you want. You need to know what type of atmosphere you want to create and have an itinerary for how the reception will flow. Take your time, ask the right questions, and you are sure to come away with the right person to make your day special.
Make sure you ask to see samples of their work. They should be able to provide you a video of a function that they have worked at. This is important to see because you want to see what type of personality they have while working. Looking at a video of their work will give you a very good idea not only of their standard of professionalism, but also what type of music they play. If you notice that the music is the same at several events - the chances are that they will play the same music for you. If you like it that is fine, however if you want more flexibility you may be better off moving on to check out someone else.
You also want to know what kind of equipment they have. The last thing you want is a Wedding DJ with shoddy equipment. A good DJ will have good equipment that has been well taken care of. If they are a successful DJ, their equipment will reflect that.
Having an extensive music collection is essential. You shouldn’t have to provide the music unless it is something special or out of the ordinary. You will have many different guests present that will differ in their musical preferences and you will want to make sure everyone hears something they like. A good DJ will know how to make sure there is a proper variety.
If your reception were to run long, you will want to know if the DJ is willing or able to stay later that the contracted time. Of course you would be expected to pay for the extra time so be sure you know upfront what that cost would be.
Also, find out if the DJ you are interviewing is the DJ that will be the one at the reception. That personal connection is important when selecting a Wedding DJ, and it could be a problem if the company sends a different person that the one you like.
Choosing the right DJ doesn’t have to be hard. Know what you want and make sure you pick the person that sees your vision as well. This is your day. Make sure you get what you want.
